It's up to Brands to Lead the Sustainability Agenda: MARYSIA Launches “Swimclean”

The pieces will be made using an environmentally sustainable and ethically produced material.

A critically important initiative for every designer.

Sustainability is a major topic of conversation in the fashion industry, and it’s a movement that has pressing momentum behind it. It is no longer enough for companies to pay lip service to “giving back”; brands have a real responsibility to lead the way in making changes, and consumers are holding them to account.  Those brands that figure out a way to be kinder to the environment, will find their place in the hearts of consumers.

MARYSIA designer Marysia Dobrzanska Reeves launched her first swim collection made from sustainable fabric this March. The sustainable fabric is obtained from regenerated raw materials (fabric scraps which would otherwise be disposed of as waste) using a mechanical rather than chemical process using far less water. The yarn meets traceability requirements which makes it possible to verify the authenticity of its recycled origins and has obtained a series of green certifications, including the Global Recycled Standard and Ecolabel EU. It is also now entered on the HIGG INDEX, an index assessing the environmental impact of a garment’s entire life cycle, developed by the SAC (Sustainable Apparel Coalition).

“This is such an exciting development for my brand and an effort that I hold dear in my heart. As a lifelong lover of the ocean, I recognize all of the ways that we are depleting our natural resources and want to do my small part by reducing waste and raising money for awareness,” says Marysia.

After a year of research, product testing and rounds of samples, the new “Swimclean” collection will be available exclusively through marysia.com and in the MARYSIA store in New York.
